Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TIHV) Academy announced the “Academics for Peace Current State Report” on the Peace Academics, who were dismissed from their positions due to signing the petition, “We Will Not Partake In This Crime.”
The report recorded that 622 of the 822 lawsuits filed against the Peace Academics at 57 separate courts were concluded once after another within the 1 year following the “rights violation” decree issued by the Constitutional Court, and that all files concluded with acquittal. It was also stated that local courts tend to extend the prosecution period intentionally, delaying decrees of acquittal in some of the cases that were not yet concluded.
According to the data shared by the foundation, the State of Emergency Committee made decisions on 108,200 of the 126,300 applications in total. The committee denied 88 percent of the applications on the dismissals. The Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TIHV) indicated that there was no change in the situation of academics, who were acquitted after the Constitutional Court decree, and that the committee continues to ignore many verdicts of acquittal issued by first degree courts, as well as the Constitutional Court decree.
Arbitrariness in restrictions against the passports of academics continue as well. It was indicated that the amendment made on the Law of Passports on October 24, 2019, allowed for those dismissed from public service during the State of Emergency to receive passports but that the arbitrary restrictions brought on the freedom of travel didn’t end completely.
