Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office prepared a summary against People’s Democratic Party (HDP) Istanbul MP Garo Paylan due to his expressions on the Armenian Genocide. Paylan is charged with ‘publicly denigrating the Turkish nation, the government of the Republic of Turkey’ and with ‘insulting the President’ in accordance with Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code due to the speech he gave at the Parliament on 14 January 2017.
Former Giresun University Rector Prof. Dr. Aygün Attar had previously made a criminal complaint against the MP as well. Attar’s complaint letter included, besides Paylan’s speech, another expression of his during the interview he gave to Canadian Horizon Weekly on 1 May 2017. “There is genocide in Turkey, and it is ongoing,” Paylan had said.
