Comedian Deniz Göktaş was ordered released after an appeal against his detention, but before he could leave prison he was arrested again on a charge of “praising crime and criminals.” Istanbul 4th Criminal Judgeship of Peace considered jokes Göktaş made about the criminal group known as the Daltons in his show “Ölü Deniz” to constitute praise of crime and criminals. The judgeship ordered his arrest on the grounds of flight risk and the possibility of tampering with evidence. Göktaş had previously been arrested over remarks in the same show on charges of “insulting the President” and “publicly degrading religious values embraced by a section of the public.”
