Free Journalists Initiative (ÖGI) shared numbers on the rights violations experienced by journalists and the profession of journalism in 2018 with a press statement organized in Diyarbakır.
According to the numbers of violation announced by the organization, the year 2018 saw:
* 141 journalists detained
* 64 journalists arrested
* Investigations were opened against 7 journalists
* Lawsuits were filed against 71 journalists
* 521 journalists were prosecuted
* 121 journalists were sentenced to imprisonment and judicial fines. 112 journalists were sentenced to a total of 546 years, 9 months and 20 days of imprisonment, 3 journalists were sentenced to life imprisonment and six journalists were sentenced to a total of 40 thousand TL judicial fine.
* 2 TV channels were sentenced to 1 million 80 thousand TL judicial fine, 1 TV channel was sentenced to 5 show penalties, 1 TV channel was penalised with advertisement penalties.
* 14 agencies and news websites were banned numerous times by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK).
* 1954 yellow press cards were annulled between January 1, 2016 and November 29, 2018.
* 4 press-media institutions were shut down.
* Trustees were assigned to one newspaper and one publishing house.
