A lawsuit was filed against social media phenomenon Murat Övüç due to “public incitement to hatred and hostility” for sharing a video of him wearing a headscarf on social media. The prosecutor’s office demanded a prison sentence of 1.5 to 4.5 years for Övüç.
In the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, it was stated that the expressions in Övüç’s video were of a nature that could incite one section of the public to hatred and hostility against another. In his statement, Övüç said that he shot the video in question as a joke on the plane, that he made a humorous comment by covering his head with the shawl on his shoulder, that he did not target anyone and that he did not accept the accusations.
Murat Övüç is expected to appear before a judge in the coming days in line with the prepared indictment.
