The Istanbul Bar Association called for solidarity with its colleagues for the release of arrested lawyer Burak Saldıroğlu. Saldıroğlu was arrested on charges of “insulting the President” for printing out Ekrem İmamoğlu’s social media posts and distributing them on the streets.
“The arrest of our colleague, who exercised his freedom of expression under Article 26 of the Constitution, is disproportionate and unjust,” the Bar Association said in a statement. It was emphasized that the arrest of the lawyer on the grounds of “suspicion of hiding” is unacceptable despite his daily presence at courthouses.
The Bar Association has invited all lawyers to Istanbul Çağlayan Courthouse to present the petition of objection to Saldıroğlu’s detention collectively.
