Nine People’s Democratic Party (HDP) members were taken into custody in the turmoil between HDP and Justice and Development Party (AKP) members, who opened a booth at Cumhuriyet Square in Esenyurt district of Istanbul last Sunday for their election campaigns. Charged with ‘publicly denigrating the values of sovereignty of state’, nine HDP members were released with judicial control. Their lawyer Seyit Demir stated that those who were taken into custody were tortured. “They wrote it in the records that those who were taken into custody have ‘insulted the Turkish flag, disrespected the Turkish flag, said to put it down.’ The notion of torture is attempted to be whitewashed here,” Demir said.
