The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled that the detention of former HDP MP Aysel Tuğluk violated Articles 5/1, 5/3, 10 and 18 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
The court stated that Tuğluk’s detention was not based on sufficient reasonable suspicion, that her freedom of expression was clearly violated and that the detention was aimed at suppressing political opposition.
Turkey will pay Tuğluk 16,000 euros in non-pecuniary damages and 1,500 euros in legal costs.
HDK Co-Spokesperson Meral Danış Beştaş described the verdict as “a verdict of justice for all those who are punished for their thoughts and identity”.
