The Constitutional Court ruled that the seizure of notes sent to imprisoned journalist Nedim Türfent and the monitoring of his lawyer’s meetings violated his freedom of expression and press freedom.
The court ordered Türfent to pay 45 thousand TL in non-pecuniary damages.
The verdict emphasized that there was no concrete justification that the notes on the translation of Türfent’s writings into English endangered prison security.
MLSA Co-Director Veysel Ok said, “This decision is a precedent for journalists in prison to continue their profession.”
