December 10 Human Rights Day: “Human rights underfoot”

Human Rights Association (IHD) and Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TIHV) made an announcement for December 10, World Human Rights Day and shared the human rights report of Turkey with the public. “We will never allow the elimination of human rights values,” it was stated. According to the report, the rights to life of 2710 people were violated in the first 11 months of 2018 and hundreds of people were exposed to mistreatment and torture. Freedom of expression and opinion, as well as the right to meeting and demonstration was put on the shelf during this period.

 

The extrajudicial execution of security forces and the random firing due to not having obeyed the ‘stop’ order caused the deaths of 14 people. 15 people lost their lives suspiciously i in prisons and detention centers as well. According to the data announced by TIHV, a total of 538 people applied to TIHV with the allegation that they were exposed to torture and other maltreatment within the fist 11 months of 2018. According to data launched by IHD, on the other hand, a total of 2719 people were exposed to torture and maltreatment within the first 11 months of 2018; 284 through beating and other methods under detainment, 175 outside of locations of detainment and 2260 during meetings and demonstrations intervened by security forces.

 

The report stated that 2018 was a year that the right to peaceful meeting and demonstration vanished and indicated that even the June 24 elections were held with meeting and demonstration bans in 25 provinces. According to the report, 785 peaceful demonstrations attempted to be organized by various parts of society were intervened within the first 10 months of 2018. 621 of those interventions were made against the “We want our jobs back” protests in Ankara and Istanbul; 10 against statements of the Saturday Mothers and 3 against protests of Istanbul Airport workers wanting to better their working conditions. People were exposed to police violence reaching to levels of torture during these interventions. 3697 people were taken into custody and 118 people were arrested.
