A lawsuit was filed against Kurdish newspaper Azadiya Welat owner Ramazan Ölçen with the allegation of “illegal organization membership.” The newspaper was previously shut down with an emergency decree. The indictment was accepted by Diyarbakır 11th Assize Court and Ölçen is charged with “acting in accordance with the purpose and aim of an illegal organization under legal cover.” The indictment describes the books and magazines seized as evidence during the search at the newspaper’s Diyarbakır office on May 10 and December 14, 2016, as “publications directed towards the same ideology and strategy of PKK/KCK.” Ölçen faces an imprisonment sentence for up to 15 years.
