A second lawsuit of compensation was filed against journalist Çiğdem Toker for 1.5 million TLs. A few months ago, Agrobay Greenhousing within Bayburt Group, known with their public tenders, has filed a lawsuit against Toker. Before the first hearing of that lawsuit on June 19, Şenbay Mining within the same Group filed another lawsuit against Toker at Ankara Civil Court of First Instance.
Known with her writings on the economy, Toker was charged with “tort and perjury damaging the public reputation of the company” with her article published on 22 October 2017, entitled, “If you are looking for savings, look at subway tenders.” In her article, Toker wrote the underground route tender for the third airport was given to Şenbay Mining from Bayburt Group and to Kolin companies. “We say they ‘were’ given, because there is no evidence of such a tender,’ wrote Toker.
“I am not going to give up on insisting to track how the people’s money and the public resources are being spent, just because of such lawsuits. The sole purpose of existence of journalism is to monitor the authority’s use of people’s money and distribution of public resources,” Toker stated.
