Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Turkey Representative Erol Önderoğlu indicated that pressures on press freedom and freedom of expression in Turkey increased in the year 2018 and that the profession of journalism has been turned into a crime, stating that 53 journalists were convicted in accordance to Article 299 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK) since August, the time Erdoğan was elected as President. The journalist further shared data on the results of the files they are tracking. “I am following the prosecutions of more than 20 journalists within three months. 20 are being prosecuted, 5-7 are being convicted,” Önderoğlu stated.

On the other hand, the journalist underlined that about 80 journalists were convicted in accordance with the Anti-Terror Law (TMK) and the Turkish Penal Code (TMK) in 2018 and stated that if the convictions are approved by the Court of Cassation, these journalists face the danger of being imprisoned in 2019.
