Community Center members Ayşegül Başar and Hamit Dışkaya were acquitted in the case they were on trial due to making a call for secularism in a coffee house in Istanbul. The two names have been arrested and later released within the case.
39 people have lost their lives in the ISIS attack organized at Reina on the New Year’s Eve connecting 2016 to 2017 and Community Center members have given a speech at a coffee house in Okmeydanı, calling for secularism. Targeted by government officials, Başar and Dışkaya have been arrested on 3 January 2017 and were released in the first hearing on 25 April 2017. The two names were facing imprisonment sentences for up to three years each due to ‘incitement to resentment and hostility’ at Istanbul 36th Criminal Court of First Instance.
