“We don’t want to see content that corrupts the morals of society” was written on a billboard in Ümraniye, Istanbul.
Bulut Can Okuducu, spokesperson for Ümraniye City Defense, shared visuals on his social media account showing the censorship of advertising posters in the district. The posters also included expressions such as “Return to your roots, Turk”, “Morality is everything, don’t forget” and racist content such as “Get out Arab”.
Okuducu described this action as “the product of an understanding that cannot tolerate women’s visibility” and stated that it is part of the systematic attacks against women’s body, identity and labor. She stated that similar posters were seen in Üsküdar and other districts of Istanbul. Stating that this understanding conflicts with the fundamental values of the Republic and targets the equality of women and men, Okuducu called for not remaining silent against such reactionary interventions.
