The lawyers of Ekrem İmamoğlu, CHP’s presidential candidate and suspended IBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, filed more than 200 criminal complaints against some publications and posts about İmamoğlu in the media and on social media platforms following his detention.

The criminal complaint applications regarding articles, comments and posts that “violate the presumption of innocence”, “incriminating” and “violate the confidentiality of the investigation” were sent to the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and RTÜK.

In the statement made by the IBB Legal Unit, it was stated that İmamoğlu was targeted with statements that were not based on concrete evidence in the publications in question, and that the publications injured the public conscience and violated personal rights.

It was stated that more than 200 applications were made by his lawyers on the grounds that the content in question was “slander, bias, violation of press ethics and extrajudicial execution”.

It was stated that the media outlets that filed criminal complaints included A Haber, Akit TV and its website, Sabah Newspaper and its website, TGRT Haber, Ülke TV and Kanal 24. Among the journalists, Cem Küçük, Abdulkadir Selvi, Gürkan Hacır, Ferhat Murat were among the names mentioned.

The statement said that “the language used in the publications for which criminal complaints have been filed contradicts not only the principles of press professionalism, but also legal rights and the judicial process.”

The lawyers stated that the publications violate the presumption of innocence and harm the integrity of the investigation and that they will follow the legal processes.
