Access to news about the tapes allegedly belonging to high-level bureaucrats and politicians has been blocked. In 2022, Cemil Önal, the accountant of Halil Falyalı, who was murdered in Northern Cyprus, was murdered in the Netherlands, and bribery and blackmail tapes were among the allegations that came to the agenda after his murder.
Cemil Önal, one of the suspects in the murder of Halil Falyalı, was arrested in the Netherlands in December 2023 but was recently released. In interviews he gave to Dutch media while in prison, he claimed that some government officials in Turkey and Northern Cyprus took bribes from Falyalı and that he had images and documents to support these allegations.
Önal’s statements, which were later relayed to Northern Cypriot journalist Ayşemden Akın, were blocked on the grounds of security and protection of public order. Freedom of Expression Association (İFÖD) made the decision public.
