2018 European Court of Human Rights statistics

European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) announced numbers for the year 2018. The data was announced with a press meeting organised by ECtHR Chief Judge Italian Guido Raimondi, there is a total of 56,350 applications against 47 Council of Europe member countries at the court by the end of 2018.

Turkey is the fourth country with the most number of applications against it at the ECtHR in 2018 with 7100 applications. At least one article of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) was violated in 140 of 146 cases concluded against Turkey last year. 40 of the 77 verdicts issuing violations of freedom of expressions in 2018 were verdicts against Turkey. Turkey was ranked second (with 41 violations) in decrees of violation regarding the right to fair trial, following Russia (with 46 violations).

Turkey has a significant position on the policy of the ECtHR in “prioritised lawsuits.” The category of prioritised cases include applications on the heaviest and most urgent violations of human rights. At the end of 2018, 20.613 prioritised files were in process. This number alone has seen 15 percent increase in 2018. The increase was mostly due to the applications from Russia due to “arrest conditions” and applications from Turkey due to “illegal arrest periods.”
