YENİ Parti Deputy Chair Utku Çakırözer said jailed BirGün reporter İsmail Arı, whom he visited at Sincan Prison, was held with 62 prisoners in a ward designed for 28 people and was sleeping on the floor. In a video published after the visit, Çakırözer argued that there was no evidence in Arı’s case requiring his detention. Arı voluntarily went to the Ankara Police Department on 20 October to give a statement following a complaint by former RTÜK Chair Ebubekir Şahin, was detained there and was arrested on 21 October on a charge of “publicly disseminating misleading information.” The journalist, who was also arrested in March 2026, had previously spent 75 days in the same prison. Çakırözer said the arrests of journalists aimed to prevent reporting on the fund crisis and called for the release of Arı and other jailed journalists.
