The Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office issued detention orders for 68 people in an investigation into Bakırköy Municipality on charges of “bid rigging” and “extortion by a public official.” The suspects included deputy mayors, municipal council members, municipal staff and representatives of companies participating in municipal tenders. The prosecutor’s office launched the investigation over allegations of irregularities in tenders for municipal goods and services and resulting public losses. Prosecutors also alleged that business owners seeking workplace opening and operating licenses were unlawfully asked for money and that licensing procedures were delayed for businesses that did not pay. The Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office said it initiated judicial proceedings under the Turkish Penal Code and public procurement legislation following complaints it received.
