Bakırköy 6th Criminal Court of First Instance sentenced doctor Nurettin Demirkol to two years and six months in prison for “false testimony” in an investigation into the death of former Transport Minister and former Süleymancılar community leader Arif Ahmet Denizolgun. The court suspended Demirkol’s sentence because he was over the age of 65 and ordered his release. Demirkol, who testified in the investigation launched after Denizolgun’s death on 8 September 2016 was deemed suspicious, denied the charges at the first hearing. He said he had examined Denizolgun only two or three times, had not been his regular private doctor and had made a slip of the tongue in his previous statements. He said he could not remember some details concerning the night of the death because 10 years had passed. He stated that the Forensic Medicine Institute had reported that Denizolgun died of natural causes as a result of a brain hemorrhage. In the opinion on the merits, the prosecutor requested Demirkol’s punishment. After the defenses, the court convicted him of false testimony.
