İzmir Karabağlar Municipality dismissed sociologist and musician Murat Mengirkaon without compensation after he had staged a sit-in outside the municipality since 24 August against a reassignment. Mengirkaon, who had worked for 15 years in the municipality’s Social Services Directorate, began resisting after being transferred to the Cleaning Affairs Directorate. Following a disciplinary investigation, the municipality terminated his employment contract. Mengirkaon said he was not dismissed for any disgraceful offense but because of his sit-in and press statements. He said the dismissal decision had also been structured in a way that prevented him from receiving unemployment benefits. Mengirkaon had previously supported various labor and social struggles with the music group Geniş Merdiven.
