The İzmir Regional Court of Justice Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office appealed the acquittal of 16-year-old A.K., who had been tried on a charge of “making propaganda for an organization” for sharing a hair-braiding video on social media. A.K. was arrested on 5 February 2026 and released on 3 March after spending 26 days at Şakran Women’s Closed Prison. İzmir 2nd Juvenile High Criminal Court sentenced A.K. on 7 May to 10 months in prison for “making propaganda for an organization through the press and media” and deferred the announcement of the verdict. İzmir Regional Court of Justice 2nd Criminal Chamber overturned the conviction on 23 September and acquitted A.K. The Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office appealed the ruling, alleging that the post created a clear and present danger and legitimized the organization’s methods of violence. A.K.’s lawyer Edhem Kuruş said the post contained no force, violence or threat and requested that the acquittal be upheld. Kuruş said they would file a compensation case over the unjust detention.
