Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University launched an investigation into Prof. Dr. Yavuz Köktaş, a faculty member at the Faculty of Theology, over a social media post. In the post, Köktaş criticized the way people dressed on the streets of Rize and said Turkey was “not an Islamic country, but a country of infidels.” Köktaş later said that by the word “infidel” he did not mean leaving the religion, but moving away from religion, particularly what he described as “becoming naked.” He said his remarks had gone beyond what he intended and were open to misunderstanding.
