Bağımsız Maden-İş General President Gökay Çakır and Organizing Specialist Başaran Aksu were arrested. Çakır had been detained a day earlier at the union’s headquarters in Soma, while Aksu had been detained in Ankara during a protest outside the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources by workers from Doruk Madencilik and Eti Gümüş, both affiliated with Yıldızlar SSS Holding, over unpaid receivables. The two unionists were referred to a judgeship with a request for arrest after giving statements to the prosecutor, and the court ordered their arrest. Bağımsız Maden-İş said it would continue the protests that workers had maintained for 17 days over unpaid wages and severance payments.
