The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) issued a decree of rights violation in the application made by author Ahmet Altan, who has been arrested for more than 1500 days. The Court decided that Ahmet Altan’s right to freedom, security and his right to freedom of expression were violated after his arrest in 2016 following the coup attempt. Lawyer Benan Molu evaluated the decree and said, “I was expecting a decree on heavy violation in regards to the Constitutional Court not having a quick evaluation on the subject and Altan having been arrested with political reasons, but no violation was found. The European Court of Human Rights seems to not have imposed a responsibility on Turkey for Altan’s release in accordance with Article 46, like it did with Osman Kavala and Selahattin Demirtaş.”
The European Court of Human Rights further issued a decree on the application of journalist Murat Asoy, who was arrested in 2016 due to “illegal organisation membership.” The court decided that the arrest of Aksoy has violated his right to freedom and security, as well as his right to freedom of expression.
