Former Tevgera Jinên Azad (TJA) spokesperson Ayşe Gökkan’s request for release was rejected in her retrial following the Court of Cassation’s reversal.
Gökkan had previously been sentenced to a total of 30 years in prison, but the Court of Cassation overturned the sentences on charges of both “membership in an illegal organization” and “aiding an illegal organization” for the same actions.
Attending the hearing at Diyarbakır 9th High Criminal Court via SEGBİS, Gökkan drew attention to the unlawfulness and said, “The Middle East is burning, I don’t want our country to burn in this fire. For this, Mr. Öcalan must be freed.” She emphasized that the work of Kurdish women cannot be criminalized.
Her lawyers asked for Gökkan’s release, stating that she had been imprisoned for 5 years, that she was suffering from health problems and that all the evidence in the file was present. However, the court ruled for the continuation of detention based on the prosecutor’s opinion and adjourned the case to December 30.
