The first hearing of lawyer Burak Saldıroğlu, who is on trial for “insulting the President” due to his social media posts, was held today. The court lifted the ban on leaving the country and adjourned the trial to October 30.
Saldıroğlu had distributed IBB Mayor and CHP presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu’s posts on the streets after his X account was shut down, and then was arrested for 50 days for his social media posts about President Erdoğan.
In his defense, he said his statements were “not criticism but warning” and did not constitute a crime. His lawyers emphasized irregularities, stating that the only basis of the case was the police report.
President Erdoğan’s lawyer asked for the continuation of judicial control, arguing that the remarks damaged honor and dignity. The court accepted Saldıroğlu’s request and lifted the ban on leaving the country.
