The proposal to record cemevis in Istanbul as prayer houses in the city development plan didn’t pass the Metropolitan Municipality Assembly due to votes by the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP). The proposal had pointed out that despite the 93 cemevis in Istanbul being prayer houses for Alevi citizens, they can’t benefit from public services like the exemption of electric and water bills, which are applied for mosques and churches, due to not being officially considered prayer houses.
