AKP Istanbul MP Ravza Kavakçı was employed at Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in 2008 and left for the U.S. on the same day with the scholarship he received to study. An access ban was brought on the news and Twitter posts revealing the situation. Kavakçı was employed as a human resources specialist in a company belonging to the municipality on December 16, 2008 and was sent to the U.S. immediately after for his Ph.D. on “political sciences.” He received salary during the entire doctorate degree, for five years. His contract requires a compulsory service for 6 years and eight months; whereas Kavakçı returned in Turkey on September 2, 2013 and was elected as a Parliament member two years later.
