In Diyarbakır, protests were held on January 8 against the ongoing clashes in the predominantly Kurdish neighborhoods of Sheikh Maksud and Eşrefiye in Aleppo, Syria. Thousands gathered in front of the Right to Life Monument in Koşuyolu Park in response to a call by the Democratic Institutions Platform, demanding an end to the attacks. The crowd marched behind a banner reading “Defending Rojava is defending humanity” and proceeded to the entrance of Sanat Street. Police prevented the carrying of an Abdullah Öcalan poster that was unfurled during the march. Keskin Bayındır, Co-Chair of the DBP, stated that the attacks in Aleppo would negatively impact the political process in Turkey.
