The Human Rights Association (İHD), the Lawyers’ Association for Human Rights (ÖHD), the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions of Turkey (CİSST), the Human Rights Association (TOHAV), and the Roman Memory Studies Association held a press conference on January 9 regarding suspicious deaths of Roman prisoners in prisons. The statement recalled that Roman prisoner Sinan Üstev was found dead in his cell at the Tekirdağ T-Type Closed Prison on December 25. Lawyer Zozan Vargün said that the right to life of Roma prisoners was systematically neglected, that deaths were dismissed on the grounds of suicide or illness, and that no effective investigation was conducted. The organizations emphasized that these deaths were not accidental, but the result of discrimination and impunity policies.
