Police intervened in a march by Dokuz Eylül University students in İzmir against economic problems and university administration practices. The students gathered outside the Alsancak Türkan Saylan Cultural Center under the slogan “Poverty is not our destiny” and sought to march to the university rectorate building. Police blocked the students’ route, prevented the march and detained 12 students. The students responded to the intervention with the slogan “Let the trustee rector live on 4,000 lira.” The protest demanded the abolition of the university cafeteria reservation system and the provision of quality, free meals and housing. The students also called for the reopening of the closed Dokuz Eylül Men’s Student Dormitory, an increase in the capacity of the women’s dormitory and the abolition of the Electronic Attendance System.
