Publisher sentenced to prison for paying royalties to jailed translator

A court sentenced Kor Kitap representative Neslihan Eser to two years and one month in prison for “aiding and abetting terrorism” because shoes and socks were sent to a jailed translator in return for royalties. According to a statement by the publishing house, the investigation began over royalty payments made to imprisoned translators and writers Tonguç Ok and Necip Baysal. At the request of one of the translators, royalties were sent twice in the form of shoes and socks instead of cash, which the court treated as a criminal act. Eser, who was held in police custody for four days during the investigation, had previously been placed under house arrest. Kor Kitap criticized the decision, saying royalty payments were part of lawful publishing activity. The publishing house called for the ruling to be overturned and for solidarity, emphasizing that publishing activities could not be criminalized.
