The first hearing of BirGün reporter İsmail Arı, who was arrested following a complaint by former RTÜK Chair Ebubekir Şahin, was scheduled for 19 November 2026. At the hearing, which was set to begin at 11:45 at Ankara 32nd Criminal Court of First Instance, prosecutors sought up to five years in prison for Arı. The indictment charged the journalist with “publicly disseminating misleading information” and “insult.” Arı, who voluntarily went to the Ankara Police Department to give a statement following Şahin’s complaint, was detained there and arrested on 21 October before being sent to Sincan No. 2 L-Type Closed Prison. The journalist was set to appear before a judge on the 29th day of his detention. Arı had also been arrested in March 2026 as part of another investigation and was released on 5 June without judicial control after spending 75 days in prison. He was thus arrested for the second time in the same year.
