The Mesopotamia Women Journalists Association (MKG) published its September 2026 Report on Rights Violations Against Women Journalists. According to the report, three women journalists were detained, two were arrested, two journalists’ homes were raided, three attacks took place, one journalist was subjected to ill-treatment, one journalist was threatened or targeted, and news coverage was obstructed in three incidents. Cases were filed against three women journalists, while two journalists received prison sentences totaling six years, five months and 24 days. Trials of 36 women journalists continued in 14 ongoing cases. Three women journalists were dismissed from their jobs. The report said four websites were shut down and access was blocked to 15 news reports and at least 810 digital media accounts or platforms. MKG emphasized that the closure of journalists’ social media accounts, obstruction of news coverage, judicial proceedings and precarious working conditions restricted the professional activities of women journalists. The association called for the release of jailed journalists and an end to interventions against press freedom.
