An investigation was launched into Cumhuriyet reporter Gülnur Saydam on charges of “publicly disseminating misleading information” and “slander” because she reported that Esenler Municipality sold a road that residents had used for 65 years. Saydam based her report on an official municipal document confirming the sale and on statements by local residents regarding the sale of the road for a housing project. Before preparing the report, she sought the municipality’s comment and published its statements without alteration after corresponding with the municipal press adviser. She also conducted video interviews with residents who filed petitions seeking cancellation of the sale. It was also stated that one of the parties whose views appeared in the report thanked Saydam in writing. Despite this, an investigation was launched on the allegation that the report was false. Saydam was expected to give a statement to the prosecutor together with her lawyer Enes Ermaner.
