Mustafa Malo, who had drawn attention after holding a banner bearing a Quranic verse at Yeditepe University Faculty of Law’s graduation ceremony, was arrested on a charge of “insulting the President” over his social media posts. Malo was also investigated on charges of “inciting the public to hatred and hostility” and “denigrating the Turkish nation, the Republic of Turkey, and the institutions and organs of the state.” On 19 August, the Istanbul Anatolian 1st Criminal Judgeship of Peace ordered Malo’s arrest on the grounds of strong suspicion of a crime, the risk of tampering with evidence, and the risk of flight. Malo was sent to Maltepe Prison after the proceedings.
