Istanbul Parliament Member Ümit Özdağ quoted the post of People’s Democratic Party (HDP) Diyarbakır MP Garo Paylan regarding the incidents on April 24, 1915 and the Armenian Genocide, sending a threatening tweet. In his Twitter post on April 24, Paylan has stated, “We walk on streets named Talat Pasha, the architect of the genocide, 106 years later. We send our children to schools named Talat Pasha. If there were streets named Hitler in Germany, if children were sent to schools named after Hitler, how would Germany be? This is the Turkey we live in.” Quoting the post, Özdağ stated, “You insolent, provocative man. If you don’t like this country, go to hell. Talat Pasha didn’t exile patriotic Armenians, only traitors like you. You will also experience a Talat Pasha incident when the time comes, and you should.” Human Rights Association (IHD) and the Committee Against Racism and Discrimination filed criminal complaints against Özdağ and claimed for Özdağ to be charged in accordance with Article 106 of the Turkish Criminal Code, regulating the charge of threat,Article 216 of the Turkish Criminal Code, regulating the charge of public incitement towards resentment and hostility, as well as the charge of discrimination regulated by Article 14 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
