According to the Women Press Freedom report, rights violations against women journalists worldwide increased by 56% in 2024, with the highest number of violations in Turkey.
Women journalists working in Turkey face discrimination, violence and harassment. According to TurkStat data, only 20.5% of news directors and all TV channel owners are men. Most women journalists believe that having children harms their careers.
TGS General Secretary Banu Tuna said that the government’s understanding of gender is reflected in the sector and women are prevented from reaching managerial positions.
According to the report, 21 women journalists were killed in 2024, 128 cases of physical assault, 156 cases of harassment and 134 cases of threats. Turkey ranked first with 128 violations.
