19 rights organisations made a written declaration on the practice of immunity in the country based on the case of child imprisoner Veli Ersoy, who allegedly has committed suicide at Eskişehir Type-H Closed Penitentiary Campus. 17-year-old Ersoy, who was kept in the juvenile section of the prison, was taken to the intensive care unit with the allegation of hanging himself, two days after he was imprisoned. Two days later, on June 30, 2019, he lost his life. The 19 rights organisations reminded the authorities their responsibility for the judicial and administrative process on the matter to be tracked with great care and for it to not conclude with impunity. “Even the deaths of the children, being kept in prisons under the control of the government, do not spark responsibility in public administrations… The children shouldn’t be imprisoned, the prisons must be closed,” the organisations have stated.
Here are the 19 rights organisations with signs under the declaration:
Civil Society Association in the Penitentiary System, Children’s Rights Association, Children’s Foundation, Union for Democracy, Dialogue Group, Platform for Eastern and Southeastern Associations, Eksi25 Association, Association for Thought and Arts Workshops Children’s Rights Center, Young Hopes Association, Human Rights Association, Human Rights Agenda Association, Lawyers for Freedom Association, Colourful Hopes Association, Social Services Specialists Association, Turkish Psychologists Association, Another Freedom for Children Foundation of Turkey, Human Rights Foundation of Turkey, Life Memory and Freedom Association, Citizens’ Initiative.
