The new legislative proposal submitted to the Parliament by the AKP draws attention with its execution regulations, especially for short-term prison sentences. According to the proposal, those who wish to benefit from supervised release will be required to serve at least one tenth of their sentence in prison. This will also cover ‘thought crime’ convicts whose execution was completed before they entered prison.
The proposal also increases the penalties for attempted crimes, intentional injury, threats and acts endangering general security in the Turkish Penal Code. A transition period is envisaged for juvenile convicts, while execution in housing and weekend execution practices are expanded.
In the regulations on internet broadcasts, band narrowing sanctions are introduced for social media companies that do not comply with content removal requests. The law is claimed to comply with Constitutional Court rulings, but is considered repressive by the opposition and rights advocates.
