Ankara Bar Association Executive Board announced that two lawyers on duty on the Code of Criminal Procedure (CMK) were beaten in front of Ankara 1st Criminal Court of Peace by one police officer and one court crier and that no more CMK assignments will be made from December 19 on for future applications from Ankara 1st Criminal Judicature of Peace and Department Command of Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crimes in case the names of the attackers are not submitted to Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and an effective investigation is not conducted.
The statement made by the Department indicated that lawyer Fadime Eymir was assigned to represent the defendant in accordance with the Code of Criminal Procedure following the request of investigation authorities within the Investigation File No. 2018/92069 at Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. It was further stated that Eymir was initially verbally harassed by a police officer, known to be working at Ankara Provincial Security Directorate Department of Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crimes, in front of the hearing room; and was later beaten in the courthouse hall by the same police officer. Following the beating, Lawyer Rights Center member lawyer Büşra Pamukçu came to the courthouse and wanted to see the judge in order to report the police violence Eymir faced; whereas Pamukçu was forced out of the hearing room by a court crier and another officer.
The statement expressed that the attack against lawyers is an attack against the profession and the Bar Association, with the words, “We will use all legal ways possible for whoever is responsible to receive the heaviest penalty.”
