Lawyer Sedat Ata, who was on trial for “insulting the President” for a video he shared on social media, was sentenced to 11 months and 20 days in prison. Bursa Orhangazi 3rd Criminal Court of First Instance commuted his prison sentence into a judicial fine of 7 thousand Turkish Liras. The verdict was the first conviction by Turkish courts after the European Court of Human Rights’ decree, which concluded an application regarding the charge of “insulting the President” for the first time last week and found it to be a violation of freedom of expression.
