International Press Institute (IPI) launched the monitoring report on 38 lawsuits with 202 defendants in total, 157 of whom were journalists. The lawsuits were tracked by IPI in September; the report pointed out that defendants in Turkey are not being tried fairly in cases of freedom of expression.
According to the report, the most frequent charges imposed on the defendants in these cases are “propaganda,” “illegal organisation membership,” “insulting the President” and “insulting Turkishness.” 34 of the 37 defendants arrested in remand within these lawsuits are journalists; 18 of those journalists have awaited trial for longer than one year. 73 percent of the evidence used to base arrest in remand are directly related to journalistic activities.
