HRW statement on Boğaziçi University

Human Rights Watch (HRW) made a statement on the protests and indicated that the students being detained with violence as they make a peaceful protest against the appointment reveals that the government is ignoring basic human rights. The organisation stated that the ongoing incidents in Turkey for more than a month revealed that protest demonstrations in Turkey are being seriously restricted, that the government misuses its authority to silence oppositional groups and that the LGBTIs are being targeted. According to the Human Rights Watch, it is a continuous application that Turkish authorities respond to protest demonstrations using extreme force and arbitrary detainments.

HRW Director for Europe and Middle Asia Hugh Williamson indicated that forcing a rector that was not elected and was appointed directly by the President to a university reveals that academic freedoms and the independence of universities are not respected in Turkey. Williamson further stated, “The Turkish authorities must respect the freedom of organisation, give up on attempting to silence the opposition through police harassment and release arbitrarily arrested students immediately.” Please click here for details.
