Freedom of Expression in January in numbers

According to the results of the press monitoring we conducted throughout January, at least 2 new investigations were launched and 2 people were prosecuted for insulting the President, and 3 people were acquitted in the resulting cases. Police intervened in at least 6 protests and demonstrations, events and protests were banned in 4 provinces for 15 days, and the ban in Van lasted for 30 days. At least 190 people were detained during peaceful meetings and demonstrations. While new investigations were launched against 33 people for violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations, 14 people were acquitted in the resulting cases. 2 new lawsuits were filed under Article 301 of the Turkish Criminal Code (TCK). At least 12 news websites were banned from access and at least 14 news websites were censored. In addition, a conscientious objector was sentenced to 11 months and 20 days in prison.
