The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) evaluated the 12 game penalties against Amedspor player Deniz Naki as well as the penalty fine issued against Amedspor club by the Turkish Football Federation due to a social media post by the player. Deciding that the penalties against the player and the club were “rights violations,” the court stated that Naki’s right to freedom of expression as well as his right to fair trial were violated.
In his post subject to penalty by the Turkish Football Federation, Naki had written, “A great victory happened for us today. We have succeeded against this dirty game played against us! We carry the happiness and pride of being a glimpse of hope, no matter how small, for our people in such difficult times. As Amedspor, we have always stood straight and we always will. We played the game today with our faith in freedom and we won, because we planted our seedlings in freedom and hope! We thank all the politicians, artists, intellectuals and people who didn’t leave us alone and give this victory to everyone who lost their lives and got injured in this tyranny, ongoing for longer than 50 days in our lands. Her bijî Azadî.”
