The Constitutional Court (AYM) decided that the slogan, “Murderer police will give account” chanted by young people, who were detained due to participating in May 1st demonstrations in 2012, is not an element of crime.
The young people chanted the slogan during the police raid against Sharing and Solidarity Association in Kadıköy, Istanbul following the warrant of Istanbul 16th Assize Court on May 14, 2012. They were prosecuted due to “insulting the police” and “resisting to prevent duty,” convicted and the court deferred the announcement of the verdict.
The Constitutional Court indicated that stereotype slogans, used during detainments and arrests, are used frequently in situations where groups performing mass demonstrations face security forces. The Court further issued that the slogan, “Murderer police will give account” is of general quality and does not address the personal honour and dignity of the police officers.
