Republican People’s Party (CHP) Istanbul MP Sezgin Tanrıkulu launched the “rights violations” report for December 2018. The report stated that 28 websites were shut down, 736 people were detained due to their social media posts and six of them were arrested; 65 cases of mistreatment and torture took place in prisons. On the other hand, six journalist/writers and 28 academics were convicted during the one-month period in lawsuits filed against them. At least 80 demonstrations were intervened and at least 291 were taken into custody. 120 lawsuits were filed due to the meetings and demonstrations, 5 were arrested. Seven were convicted in ongoing lawsuits. 21 protests and/or demonstrations were banned.
